Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital
Stage 1B of the Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital redevelopment was constructed in front of the existing hospital complex. This building contains a new main entry, pharmacy, blood bank, 42 bed medical ward and integrated rehabilitation unit. Minor upgrading to the existing Emergency Department was also undertaken.
The rehabilitation unit integrates inpatient accommodation with allied health facilities and outpatient services. This contributes towards staffing efficiencies and ensures continuity of patient care from hospital to home. The gymnasium is a major architectural element in the building’s design.
The main entry features an inlaid floor pattern designed by members of the local aboriginal community. This developed from an awareness of the need to ensure strong community ownership of the new building and involved close consultation with local community groups.
